Upcycle a Wooden Box

Hello friends! I am here today posting for The Funkie Junkie Boutique. The current challenge is to reuse and recycle something. I am upcycling a cigar box. Now, I am not a fan of smoking, however the cigar boxes are often a great size for decoration! Look around for other appropriate boxes - you may be surprised!

I am a huge fan of all things Tim Holtz! Today's post proves you can use his products to make a colorful feminine wooden box!

You may know I am a cool colors girl so this box is just singing my song! I will walk you through many of the steps, and I there is also a YouTube video below.

Here is a photo of the inside of the box. I used cardstock from Time Holtz in those glorious cool colors. I started the project by painting the entire outside of the box with Turquoise acrylic paint from my stash. After drying, I got to work!

The next step was to work on all the die cuts.

The Sizzix Simple Plaid Die worked great to provide a textured background for the box! I die cut 4 pieces using a heavy weight cardstock. Once I was ready to apply to the box top with Collage Medium, I found that I had to rotate and flip the pieces to create an almost complete plaid top. I only applied the plaid to the top of the box and trimmed the sides when dry.

I love this Perspective Butterfly! It has a great size and design. I cut and glued 2 butterflies for strength. They are colored with Salvage Patina, Wilted Violet and Shaded Lilac. I die cut the center piece out of Black Cardstock and mounted on the center. Once the piece was dry, I put in my spray box and sprayed with Resist Spray to allow for shaping of the wings after gluing down only the body.

I colored the heavyweight cardstock by ink smooshing with Wilted Violet and Shaded Lilac Ink for the flowers and Peeled Paint and Bundled Sage for the leaves.

I assembled the die cut images on the top of the box using Collage Medium to attach them. I wanted the arrangement to cover the top without overlapping the edges. The sentiment Create is cut from 3 layers of Cougar CardStock, glued together with the smaller sentiment glued on top. I created the shiny purple sentiment by inking with an Embossing Dauber, and covering with Wilted Violet Embossing Glaze!

Products used:

Bloom Colorize Dies
Sizzix Shadow Script #1
